A Guideline For A Successful Hike
Hiking is a great way to spend time with your kids and enjoy the beauty that the earth offers. There are definitely certain things one must know before going on a hike and this guide will offer you several tips to help be as safe as possible on your journey. Whether you're a rookie or a veteran, these tips should always be followed.
Many people often overlook the difficulty level of a hike. It's much harder than people think, especially the tougher trails out there. If you're not in shape, do not start your first hike on a 3-day trip. Start slow and take your time. Or get fit before going on your first hike! Anytime you do go on a hike, always let someone know where you're heading.
It can be tempting to go off trail during a hike or it can happen by accident. You should always have a map/guide and a compass. These items can help you find your way to safety in the event you end up lost. Most trails will have markings on the trail to help prevent you from getting lost.
Dehydration is a common issue for many hikers. Always over pack the amount of water you think you'll need to be on the cautious side. If you're going on a hike more than one day, the water will get too heavy so I highly recommend bringing a water purification system. Never drink water that hasn't been treated.
We've all witnessed weather reports that aren't accurate. Always overdress for the hike as you can easily remove layers. If the weather changes and you're not prepared, it won't be fun. Rain gear and boots are a must. Boots will prevent you from turning an ankle, but make sure they're comfortable and won't cause any blisters.
Nobody wants to give up on a hike, but sometimes it's the better choice! If you're not feeling well or you're injured, it's best to return to the base. If you think you just need a rest, then you should absolutely take it. Find a comfortable and safe spot and enjoy the break until you feel energized.
Before leaving, make sure you know how to start a proper fire. Even if you're only going for a one day hike, you never know how long you'll end up out there. A fire can help keep you warm, keep animals away as well as provide a way for a search team to find you if you happen to go missing.
There are many other things I can get into, but these are some of the essentials. A few other things to bring along include a first-aid kit and bug spray. Hopefully you'll use these tips as a starting point and hike in a safe manner!
